Winter Jacket
by Martijn Benders / 1999

          I wrote you a message
wanted to tie it to your leg
but when I opened the cage
          you wouldn't move.
          You wouldn't move one bit.

I tried to put on a disguise.
It didn't fit me but doves
          have bad sight you know.
That's why they always long for home.

You just stared at me dumbfounded.
I started dancing around your cage.
You didn't even move your head.
          You didn't even nod approvingly.

You put on your winter jacket
as I build a fire beneath the cage.

Maybe your house is not that far.
Maybe your house is not that far away.
